MADRE (Live) Poetry & artwork by Jessica Chapnik Kahn
Jessica Chapnik Kahn did not intend to write a book in the first week and months following the birth of her son. She simply began to understand her experience of him by writing. She began to understand his face by drawing it. This is how her poetry book MADRE was created, in the midnight hours with her baby in her arms, a line by line documentation of the mysterious unfolding of becoming a Mother. It was a quiet attempt to grasp the ungraspable. Several years later, composer Anna Hirst Friedman encountered MADRE and was deeply moved. Drawing inspiration from the raw collection, she transformed several poems into soaring choral compositions. Performed by a six-piece vocal ensemble, this collaboration between poet and composer is a synesthetic experience, bringing Mother to the foreground of the sublime.
